Dryer Vent Cleaning, Fire Prevention

As part of National Fire Prevention Week, SoBellas Home Services of El Paso, Texas is urging the public to take precautions while cooking this holiday season.

The theme of this year's prevention week is "prevent kitchen fires."

Fires associated with cooking have become the most common types of fires that occur in occupied buildings.

"That actually took over from cigarette smoking in last four or five years.”

In an effort to educate El Paso, Texas residents of the dangers of kitchen fires, SoBellas Home Services has compiled a list of safety tips focused on "cooking with caution."

•Be alert. If you are tired or have consumed alcohol, don't use the stove.

•Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling food.

•Never leave your home while food is cooking.

•Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stove top, such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper products, grease and aerosol cans.

•Clean your stove top and oven regularly.

•If a fire does occur, call 911 immediately.

•Evacuate and make sure other occupants do the same.

•Keep a lid near the stove to smother small grease fires.

•Never use water on a grease fire.

•If an oven fire occurs, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed.

•If possible, keep a portable fire extinguisher handy.

•Always have an exit plan in case of a fire.

In addition to the warnings regarding kitchen fire safety, SoBellas Home Services of El Paso, Texas provided several general fire safety tips.

"Remove the lint from the dryer screen after every use," they said. "We've been getting quite a few dryer fires."
